Obituary of Robert W. Walsh

Robert W. Walsh, age 84, of Syracuse, New York died Monday, December 8, 2003 at Community General Hospital, Onondaga Hill, New York. Robert was born July 5, 1919 in Syracuse, New York the son of John P. and Margaret Mary (McGraw) Walsh. He was a life resident of Syracuse and a graduate of Valley High School Class of 1938. He retired in 1978 as a District Chief with the Syracuse Fire Department after 32 years of service. He and his wife were responsible for the development of the "Syracuse Street Guide" still in use today by the Syracuse Fire Department. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, a long time member of the Valley Men?s Club and American Legion Post 1468, a founder of Valley Little League, appointed by Mayor Tom Young as an original member of the Citizens Review Board, and a past member of the Board of Directors for Midstate Youth Hockey. He was a showcase baseball player in the 1940?s and 1950's. He was a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II and a former POW awarded the Purple Heart. He was the ultimate family man. He loved model trains, his "Model A" Ford and was an avid golfer. Mr. Walsh is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marion E. (Talmage) Walsh; three sons and their wives, Robert J. and Karen Walsh of Camillus, New York, William M. and Susan Walsh of Onondaga Hill, New York, John D. and Chrissie Walsh of Syracuse, New York; brother-in-law and his wife, John G. and JoAnn Talmage of Florida; seven grandchildren, Robert E. Walsh, Sheila A. Smith, Carol D. VanRyn, William M. Walsh Jr., Michele M. Hayes, Britney A. Walsh and Sean P. Walsh; nine great-grandchildren and one niece, Patricia Gorman of South Carolina. Services: Friday, December 12, 2003, 9:00 a.m. at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, Inc. and 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes, 300 Valley Drive, Syracuse where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Thomas Fitzpatrick.
