Obituary of Chris J. Gibides
Chris J. Gibides, 49, of East Syracuse, found glorious and eternal peace when he passed on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 in North Carolina. He spent the final six weeks of his life there, being cared for by his sister Susan and her husband Dan. Chris died from late stage cancer, which had gone undiagnosed until recently.
Chris was the youngest of five children born to Nicholas and Dorothy (McClusky) Gibides. He was raised on LaFayette Road in Jamesville, and attended LaFayette Public Schools. After exploring his options as a young adult, as one does to foster independence, he settled in the neighborhood of Eastwood. There he found a family of friends with whom he developed lifelong relationships. Chris was gratified by working in the trades, most recently as a pipefitter, a job he regretted being too ill to continue.
Chris is survived by his father, Nicholas, of Lakewood, siblings Karen of Massachusetts, Susan of North Carolina, Nicholas of Texas, and Daniel of North Carolina, as well as their spouses, children, and grandchildren. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles Frances and Raymond Scouten, Jane Dyer, Richard and Elia McClusky, and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his mother Dorothy, in 2012.
We are enormously grateful to Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, NC, and Dr. Gennady Bratslavsky, and his team, (especially Kimberly), at SUNY Upstate. The care, medical expertise, support, and compassion they provided to Chris and his family was invaluable.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Thursday, October 17, from 2 - 4pm at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, 4612 S. Salina St. Syracuse. A funeral service will follow at 4:00pm. Please also attend a celebration of Chris' life after the service, details to follow. Burial will be private.
