Obituary of Mike Walburger

Mike Walburger, beloved husband and father, passed away at the age of 68 on Wednesday, May 8, at Upstate University Hospital.

Mike was born on February 21, 1951 in DeRuyter, NY to Charles and Jennie (Lewis) Walburger.  He attended Onondaga Central School and then joined the United States Army at the age of 17.  He was a Vietnam Veteran.  While in Vietnam, he worked as a Tank Mechanic.  He was Honorably Discharged from the Army in 1972.

On January 31, 1981, he married the former Cindy Hall.  Their daughter, Tara Marie (whom Mike affectionately called Babycakes) was born on November 22, 1981.

Mike’s mechanic experiences in the Army led him to open Walburger’s Garage, an auto repair shop that he and Cindy have owned and operated since 1986.

Mike was an exceptionally hard-working man who loved his job, his family, Tully and the surrounding communities.  He was known by all to be an extraordinarily helpful, friendly and kind man.  If you were down on your luck or needed help, Mike (who was nicknamed “Beagle”) would be there in a heartbeat.  If you lived in the Tully area, it was a given that you would see a Walburger’s truck driving down the road with Mike behind the wheel, giving you a friendly smile and wave.

Mike was proud of his association with the New York State Troopers and Sheriff’s Department.  He was awarded the Everett Hansel Award for exemplary service to the Tully Fire Department in 1997, and was the Tully Rotary Department’s Citizen of the Year in 2009.

Mike was predeceased by his parents Charles and Jennie, and brother, Charles.  Mike is survived by his wife of 38 years, Cindy (Hall) Walburger and daughter, Tara, his siblings Cherie Redfield, Jennifer Gibson, John, Mark and Ricky Walburger.  He is also survived by his Father and Mother-in-Law, Julian and Alice Hall, and Brothers and Sisters-in-Law Roger and Christine Volles, Cheryl and Del Wayne, Greg and Brenda Hall, Geoff Hall (Stephanie Place), Glenn and Missy Hall, Catherine and Joseph Mioni, Cary and Gus Buerkle, Gerald and Jamie Hall, Gary and Jennifer Hall, Colleen and Dana Palmer, and many, many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, May 12, 2019 from Noon to 3 at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, 2584 Field Lane, Lafayette, NY 13084.  Burial will be immediately after the service at the Tully Cemetery, Meetinghouse Road, Tully.  After the burial, please join the family at the Tully United Community Church, Meetinghouse Road, for a celebration of Mike’s life.
