I came to this country in 1985 as a young foreign student from India to study Chemical Engineering- but unclear about what I wanted to do in life.
Then, in the Spring of 1986, I took a class in Solid State Physics with Dr Vook. That class changed the course of my life. It was a transformational experience. I was hooked on Solid State Physics, Materials Science and Microelectronics.
Thank you Professor Richard Vook! I shall always remain indebted to you for bring clarity and sense of purpose to my life.
In fact, sitting on my couch watching TV after dinner today, I suddenly remembered you and decided to look you up.
I was deeply saddened that you had passed away in 2019. You will always be remembered as a great teacher, outstanding researcher and most importantly for me - as the one person who perhaps most influenced my thought process and life for the better.
My greatest respects, love and gratitude to you Professor Vook.
Your student, Vin Chikarmane

It was with great sadness to learn the passing of Prof. Vook.
He was the first teacher I met in the US and my MS thesis advisor.
He was an extremely intelligent and hard-working person. He seemed to work all the time and utilize his time effectively, no matter in the laboratory, office or classes. He always solved most problems on the spot and never late in anything.
I had meetings with him several times in the lunch hours to discuss my research results. That was the only time he could find to discuss with me without distractions. I vividly remembered he quickly ate his sandwiches during our meeting. It was unbelievable in my country that a famous professor had a simple lunch while working and without a break at all.
More than thirty years ago, I came to US from Taiwan, a third-world country at that time, to find out why America is such a great country. After working under Prof. Vook, I realized that it was not the land, natural resources, infrastructures.... etc., it was those smart, honest and hard-working individuals, like Prof. Vook, who devoted their whole life to their careers and served as the backbone of this country.
He set a very high standard for me to follow.
Thank you Prof. Vook and I alway miss you!
Your student, Jyh C(JC) Chen

I have been trying to contact Richard for nearly a year but blocked by Fleet Landing. So very sorry to now find out today that he passed away. We were childhood friends going to the same Lutheran school. We visited one another for years and went on trips to many places including Europe and Puerto Rico. He was my longest friend in life. I am very sad and miss him.

Dear Liz, thinking of you and your family at this time, so sorry about your father's passing. He was a very smart man and we enjoyed both of your parents as our neighbors! My husband and I appreciated their friendliness and will never forget the warm welcome that your mom gave us when we first moved in.
Sincerely,
Trish Murray
