Obituary of Francis Paul Kiniry

Francis Paul Kiniry, 87, of "The Valley" died Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, NY. Born in Utica, NY, he was the son of the late Adelbert and Katherine (Kearns) Kiniry.

Paul graduated from St. Francis de Sales School (Utica, NY) in 1948, after which he attended Mount St. Mary's College (Emmitsburg, MD), graduating with a B.S. in Accounting in 1953.

Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953, Paul was stationed primarily at Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Rucker, Alabama. He was honorably discharged in 1955, having attained the rank of corporal.

In 1955, Paul enrolled in the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1957 with an MBA in Accounting.

Paul moved to Syracuse, NY in 1957, working in the accounting department of Easy Washer Company for one year. Upon obtaining his New York State CPA license in June of 1958, he joined the accounting firm of Hurdman & Cranston (Syracuse, NY), where he was employed until 1966. In 1966, he joined the accounting firm of Testone & Company (Liverpool, NY), working there until 1972, when it was merged into Deloitte Haskins & Sells.

In 1978, Deloitte Haskins & Sells moved its upstate New York offices to Rochester, NY. Not wishing to relocate from Syracuse, Paul resigned and started his own firm, Kiniry & Misner with offices in the State Tower Building. In 2006, Kiniry & Misner was merged into Bowers & Company, and Paul became a partner in that firm. He continued working for Bowers & Company up until the time of his death.

Paul was a lifetime New York Yankees fan who had the great fortune to attend numerous games at Yankee Stadium during his youth in the 1940s and 1950s. He fondly recalled watching Yankee greats such as Joe DiMaggio play, and was heartened by the recent emergence of the Baby Bombers. He was also a loyal fan of the Syracuse Chiefs, holding season tickets for many years.

Besides following baseball, Paul loved to visit the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, NY, visiting nearly every summer since the late 1940s.

Paul was fond of upstate New York, particularly the Adirondack region, this fondness instilled in him by his parents. In addition to the Adirondacks, he also enjoyed the Mohawk Valley, if for no other reason than it provided him the opportunity to dine at Saltsman's Hotel in Ephratah, NY.

He excelled also at floral gardening, a skill no doubt inherited from his father.

Paul was predeceased by his sister Theresa, who died in infancy, and his beloved wife of fifty-five years, Kathleen Kiniry, who passed away in April of 2016. He is survived by his children, twins Sharon (John Chidsey) Kiniry of Schenectady, NY and Brian (Sanae Hamazaki) Kiniry of Boston, MA and daughter Sheila Kiniry of Jersey City, NJ.

While living in the North End of Syracuse, Paul was a communicant of Our Lady of Pompei Church. When he moved to "The Valley" in 1962, Paul was at first a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, and later St. James (Our Lady of Hope) Church.
